Apprentices welcomed at Becker Mining Australia
New trainees and apprentices have started at Becker Mining Australia workshop, with the group comprising the largest single intake in the company’s history.
Becker Mining Australia has started a number of apprentices at its Thornton NSW facilities over the years. This year is no different with 3 new apprentices commencing in January 2019. This is triple the usual number of apprentices over previous year’s intakes due to the growth of the business within Australia. The new apprentices are Luke Matt, Alex Harper and Edgar Atkins have now been welcomed to the team.
Cameron Irwin, Becker Mining Australia’s Electrical & Production Manager said the team was pleased to welcome their largest cohort of apprentices and trainees. “The company has more than 20 years of experience in training and hosting the next generation of talent, demonstrating our strong commitment to local training and employment,” he said.
“We see ourselves operating our Thornton facilities for decades to come to support the local coal mining industry. We pride ourselves on trained personnel that are central to this vision,” Mr Irwin said.
Employees are undertaking apprenticeships and traineeships in a range of fields, including mechanical fitting, electrical instrumentation, process plant operator, operations support and business administration.
Becker Mining Australia has also been working with Hunter Trade College hosting year 11 and 12 students for their practical work placements. Year 12 students work 3 full days per week, year 11 students work 2 days per week for the duration of each school term.
These new starters will be essential for Becker Mining Australia growth plans, which could see the facility manufacture more new machines in 2019 than any other year of the company’s history. Recently Becker Mining Australia has also moved to both night and day shifts to meet the high demand of overhauls for our key customers. This means that the workshop is now open before sunrise and finishes at Midnight during the week.
Becker Mining Australia remains a key supplier to the Hunter Valley coal chain. The Thornton facility is strategically located just minutes away from the port of Newcastle, the world's largest coal export port. Rising demand for coal, particularly in the Asian region, has resulted in a strong increase in the volume of coal exported through the port to 160 million tonnes per annum.
